2021 December Distribution

Distribution update

We're paying out two distributions this December. Running a second distribution means we can maximise what we can pay out.

Our first distribution – 15 December

The main distribution (15 December) will include the majority of royalties you would expect to receive, except money for multi-territory online services, i.e. streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music etc. Instead, this will be paid out in your second distribution.

  • Microsoft Xbox GEOL Q4 2020 – Q2 2021 – Licensing discussions are ongoing for this service and the contract has not yet been signed. We’re expecting a signed contract and invoices raised and paid in time for distribution in April 2022.
  • BT Vision GEOD (General Entertainment on Demand) Q1 2019 – Q2 2021 – Licensing discussions remain ongoing for this service and the final contract has not yet been signed. We’re expecting a signed contract and invoices raised and paid in time for distribution in April 2022.
  • Disney+ Q2 2020 - Q2 2021 and Apple Q1 2020 - Q2 2021 (General Entertainment Online Licence – GEOL) - Licence negotiations are now complete and we are pleased to include these royalties in the first December distribution.
  • Disney Audio Visual (AV) Q4 2020 – Q3 2021 – we have now received the usage data and so will pay out these broadcast royalties in the first December distribution.
  • Film, General & Broadcast and Online royalties from SIAE (Italian collecting society) Q3 2019 – Q2 2020 – we have now received the data needed to process the royalties and they are included in the first December distribution.
  • SIEE Digital Games (Sony PlayStation) 2018/2019 – We are paying out royalties for the music used within downloads from the PlayStation Store now that we have data showing what music was used alongside a settlement with SIEE Digital Games.
  • NBC Universal Q1 2021 – Q3 2021 - Licence negotiations are now complete and we are pleased to include these royalties in the first December distribution.
  • Public Reception Q3 2021 - Public Reception royalties come from revenue relating to TVs and radios used in licensed premises, such as pubs, restaurants or cafés. Due to the reopening of many of these businesses in the summer following lockdown, we are starting to see royalties recover, though they are still not in line with pre-pandemic levels. It’s also up compared to last year because we’re no longer holding revenue back to cover any necessary credit notes for businesses closed due to lockdown.
  • Public Performance Q3 2021 – Public Performance, is revenue collected for any music played in public. This could be live music such as concerts and theatre shows, or non-live such as music played in cinemas, churches, restaurants or airlines for example. Although royalties have increased in comparison to the same period last year, they are still not in line with pre-pandemic levels. Like Public Reception, we also are no longer holding back revenue for credit notes for businesses closed during lockdown.
  • International payments Q3 2021 - Higher revenue has been received from BUMA, the Dutch society and ASCAP, one of the American societies. International Major Live Concerts Service (MLCS) is still low due to the lack of touring musicians, but we’d expect this to start to return to normal from the beginning of next year.
  • Netflix and Amazon General Entertainment Online (GEOL) Q2 2021 - Streaming services such as Netflix saw growth during the pandemic. The increase in subscriber numbers is resulting in more revenue for our members.
  • Sky Year End Reconciliation payments - If you’ve previously received PRS or MCPS royalties from Sky paid between November 2020 and October 2021, you may receive a top-up. For those of you who aren’t sure what year end reconciliations are, basically, sometimes more revenue is collected from a specific revenue source than is paid out in royalty distributions for that period. If we’ve got revenue left over after we’ve made all the distributions for the licence period, it will be distributed to members whose music was used during the period as a reconciliation payment.

Our second distribution – 22 December

The second distribution (22 December) will include only multi-territory online services (e.g. Spotify, YouTube, Facebook etc).

Overall, the December distribution value is up compared to the same period in 2020. This is mainly due to the recovery of Public Performance & Public Reception revenues and an increase in General Entertainment Online (also known as GEOL) revenue due to the signing and distribution of new Disney+ and Apple+ licenses alongside payments for 2018-19 SIEE (PlayStation) revenue. • Amazon Prime Q3 2020 and Q1 – Q2 2021 – invoicing delays mean that this will now be paid in April 2022.
  • Napster Q4 2020 - Q221 – we are awaiting licensing revenue to be received in order to pay out the royalties to members.

More time is required to process the following royalties. Distribution is expected in April 2022:

  • YouTube User Generated Content and subscription video on demand (SVOD)  Q1 - Q2 2021
  • Amazon Music (Downloads) Q2 2021
  • Deezer Q1- Q2 2021
  • Deezer Q1 2019-Q4 2020 and additional back claims dating between 2016 and 2017
  • Dance Music speciality services including Traxsource (Q2 2016 – Q4 2017) and Juno (2014)

Multi territory online includes the likes of Facebook, YouTube, Apple and Spotify and we continue to see consistent growth in this sector versus forecast. We’ve been working hard with ICE to improve efficiencies and maximise royalties to you. In this December distribution we can really see the benefit of that reflected in the value of multi territory online.

The main payments included are:

  • Facebook Q2 2020-Q4 2020
  • YouTube Music Q2 2021 will be paid alongside YouTube User Generated Content (UGC) Q4 2020 and YouTube Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) Q2 2018-Q2 2019.
  • Amazon Unlimited Q3 2020 – Q2 2021
  • Apple Music Q2 2021, and Apple Music & Streaming Residuals Q4 2015-Q2 2018
  • Spotify (Q2 2021) – including residual usage from Q4 2019

Second stage invoicing for Apple, Amazon Music and Spotify - In this second December distribution we have processed second stage invoicing for Apple, Amazon Unlimited, and Spotify. Second stage invoicing is where we re-process music usage data a second time, matching up music used to our members work. This is so that we can pick up any additional matches that weren’t available when the first process was done. For example, members may have registered their music after we did the initial processing, so this is a great way for us to make sure our royalty payments are as accurate as possible.
