UK grime is going through a great time as ‘the rest of the world has changed to be more open’ to the scene, MC and artist Ghetts has said.
The Rebel With A Cause grime star made the comments as part of a MOBO Unsung panel at PRS for Music’s Streatham offices discussing how to promote your music and brand, alongside Wiley manager John Woolf and Sony Music’s Parris Oh.
Ghetts said: ‘We’re now in a moment where new artists like Stormzy are coming through with the original attitude and breathing new life into it.’
‘There’s only so much the generation before can do. A 15 year old might not relate to me in the same way they relate to Stormzy. And rightly so. With the youths coming through, they’re breathing new life into it and new energy into it.’
The panel discussed the current success of grime artists such as Stormzy, Skepta and Ghetts himself.
According to the MC, coming from the scene instils in artists a DIY attitude meaning that ‘grime gives you training in everything’.
He discussed how being on radio trains you in how to hold a mike and deliver vocals as well as distributing music to shops himself. ‘I come from a time when the only pressing plant was £5.19 for 1,000 CDs. We’d press up our CDs, go to the record shop and do sale and return.’
‘That comes even from watching Wiley being in and out of a label relationship. The grime scene is built on that - anyone that’s anyone, they know what they’re doing on their own.'
