Geoffrey Burgon, the Classical, TV and film music composer has died aged 69.

The composer's body of work including internationally-famous theme music for Monty Python's Life of Brian, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Forsyte Saga and Brideshead Revisited reached an audience of millions.

Born in Hampshire, Burgon began playing the trumpet in his school jazz band and taught himself to read music before going to the Guildhall School of Music. Abandoning his early desire to become a jazz trumpeter, Burgon made writing music his passion.

Burgon won two Ivor Novello awards, the first one for the television adaptaion of John Le Carré's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 1979, the second for Brideshead Revisited in 1981. He also won Bafta Awards for his themes for the remake of The Forsyte Saga and Longitude. He was published by Chester Music

Despite his fame and fortune, Burgon loved playing with a group of local musicians in  the band Bisley Dilleskie - a nod to jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

Geoffrey Burgon leaves behind his wife, Jacqueline Krofchak, and his three children.
