The musician will take over the role from Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell, who is stepping down in September 2013.
This new post will see Eliza developing musical projects alongside Sage Gateshead’s existing folk music programme. She's expected to bring her extensive range of national and international contacts to the venue.
Eliza said: ‘I have always admired Folkworks and Sage Gateshead and wished to be a part of what is going on in one of the cities closest to my home in North Yorkshire and I am now in a position to do that.
‘By working together I believe we can do something very special.’
Eliza is the daughter of acclaimed folk musicians Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson and has been involved in folk music since she was 14.
Her list of accolades includes two Mercury Music Prize nominations, a nomination for a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music as well as winning more than five BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Her latest record - Wayward Daughter - is a collaboration with Jim Moray and is due for release in June. The album will mark 21 years in her career as a professional musician.
