Every month, Alternative Classical puts together an events guide recommending informal concerts, gigs and other classical-inspired events in non-traditional venues across the UK. With the coronavirus wiping out events across the board, they have created a Spotify playlist of tracks you would have heard live.

The current playlist includes music from across the ages by composers from Italy, Russia, Canada, the US, Germany and the UK. Composers include: Bach, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Handel, Schnittke, Tavener, Barbara Strozzi, Steve Reich, Cassandra Miller and Benjamin Tassie, among others. Artists include the Monteverdi Choir & Orchestra, Emerson String Quartet, Tenebrae Choir, Borodin Quartet, Emanuela Galli, Jerusalem Quartet and Sean Shibe.

Alternative Classical creates and promotes new approaches to classical music. According to their website, AC want to ‘change the image of classical music to attract new audiences, to push boundaries and to explore fresh ways of programming classical music, both within and outside of its traditional settings’.

They write: ‘We want to support the organisations and musicians already working towards this goal with our specialist marketing, press and project management expertise, and produce more opportunities for alternative classical events. In short, we want to make new projects bigger and better to redefine the way classical music is perceived.’

Listen to the Alternative Classical playlist below. Enjoy.
