Emerging composers are being urged to submit scores for The Hermes Experiment to perform at a series of The Night With… concerts later this year.

Works are ideally sought for the full quartet (soprano, clarinet, harp, double bass), and should be between five and 10 minutes long. Pieces must not have been premiered already, but they don’t necessarily have to be written for this call.

Up to five works will be chosen for a workshop on 24 November in the Scottish Music Centre, Glasgow. One of the five works will be chosen to feature in The Night With… concerts later in the week.

The concerts will also include works by Matthew Grouse, Josephine Stephenson, Robin Haigh and Meredith Monk.

Scores will be assessed anonymously and The Night With… organisation is particularly welcoming applications from emerging female and non-binary composers based in Scotland.

All scores must be submitted under a pseudonym and any with identifying marks will be discarded.

Organisers have iterated that this call for scores is as much about finding and developing interesting new music and composers as finding a new work that will fit within the programme.

The shortlist will be chosen by a panel consisting of representatives from The Hermes Experiment, Matthew Whiteside (chief executive and artistic director of The Night With…) and an external composer.

The deadline for submissions is 1 October 2019. For more info, and to submit your music, see http://thenightwith.com/2019/06/05/the-night-with-2019-call-for-score-for-emerging-composers/
