Sam Smith, vocalist with Disclosure and Naughty Boy, has won the BRITs Critics’ Choice award.

The singer songwriter beat the likes of Ella Eyre and Chloe Howl to take the prize and will be presented with the accolade at the BRITs Are Coming nominations show to be broadcast on 9 January.

Previous winners of the award include Adele, Tom Odell and Florence + The Machine.

Sam provided vocals on Disclosure’s hit Latch and on Naughty Boy’s number one single, La La La.

Sam said: ‘It means the world to me, it's the only award I really care about. I've watched the BRITs religiously every single year.

‘I'm such a massive fan of female singers and some of the females who have won this award have been my biggest inspirations, so to even be nominated means a lot to me, a lot.’

The artist has already released his debut Nirvana EP. It’s won him fans and built buzz for a debut album, which is expected next spring.

Next year's BRIT awards will take place on 19 February at London's O2 arena.
