Legendary songwriter and pop star David Bowie has sadly passed away aged 69.

The news regarding the artist, who released his latest and 25th album Blackstar on Friday (8 January), was announced via his social media channels.

According to the statement: ‘January 10 2016 - David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.’

Tributes from a huge range of artists and celebrities including the likes of Kanye West, Noel Gallagher and astronaut Tim Peake have been posted online.

Friend and long-term producer Tony Visconti posted a tribute on Facebook. He said: ‘He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work of art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.’

David Bowie’s musical career needs little introduction, having experimented brilliantly with all musical styles from glam rock to drum and bass over the course of a 40 year career.

His most memorable hits include Starman, Ashes to Ashes, Heroes, Changes and Young Americans.
