PRS for Music will stage a series of workshops about music rights in Ghana and Nigeria this week.

Led by Michelle Escoffery, President of the PRS Members' Council, and Jacqueline Pelham-Leigh, PRS for Music’s Senior Membership & Development Lead (Africa), the workshops will take place in Accra on Wednesday and Thursday (22-23 November) before concluding on Saturday (25 November) in Lagos.

Speaking about the purpose of these educational workshops, Jacqueline said: 'Fair and equitable remunerations for your art form are critical for artists, songwriters, producers and beat makers. Now more than ever, knowing how to safeguard your intellectual property and collect royalties is incredibly important for the huge amount of talent in Africa who are permeating across the world.

'That’s why we are engaging with local experts, songwriters and producers to deliver educational workshops about knowing and protecting your music rights and royalties. We are invested, not just interested.'

Michelle added: 'We know music royalties and the business of music can be confusing. We are committed to empowering composers, songwriters and artists who write their own music in any capacity to have longevity in their careers, and not leave any money on the table. As a songwriter myself, I advocate for makers of music to understand the long-term value of their creative skill sets and contributions, ensuring due and right remunerations for their works throughout time.

'PRS for Music’s purpose is to protect and grow the value of your music around the globe. We are extremely excited to be meeting with local experts, creators and entrepreneurs who are passionate about not only making music, but having their music work for them.'
