Black History Month 2021 has begun, along with a campaign encouraging people of all ages to share what they are Proud to Be.

PRS for Music and M Magazine are too celebrating, with a calendar packed full of guest editorials, long-form features, playlists and exclusive video content.

Read our first Black History Month 2021 feature, written by award-winning electronic musician Dirty Freud.

PRS for Music write: ‘Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, a time for us to further celebrate the profound impact that Black talent and culture has had on the music industry.

‘Throughout October we’ll be championing and amplifying the voices of some incredible Black songwriters, composers, and industry figures, without whom our business would be unrecognisable.

‘Inclusion is one of our core company values and we are proud of the work, passion and dedication that everyone at PRS has shown as we strive to improve fairness and opportunities for all, 365 days a year.’

Catherine Ross, the editor of Black History Month UK, said: ‘It’s been a challenging time for many Black and Brown people, with so much in the media about racism, inequality and injustice. We wanted the theme of Black History Month 2021 to focus on celebrating being Black or Brown, and to inspire and share the pride people have in their heritage and culture – in their own way, in their own words.’
