A record 57,000 tickets were sold in the first hour of booking for the 2016 BBC Proms, up 25,000 on the same period last year.

Online booking opened at 9am on 7 May and set a new record for the Royal Albert Hall, helped by new investments in the venue’s website and online booking system.

Among the most popular Proms are the First Night of the Proms (15 July), the Late Night Prom dedicated to David Bowie (29 July), George and Ira Gershwin Rediscovered with John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra (13 August).

Tickets for the majority of the 2016 BBC Proms are still available and every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with many also televised across the BBC.

Up to 1,350 standing tickets are released on the day of each Prom, priced at £6, and returns are available via the Royal Albert Hall box office.

David Pickard, director of the BBC Proms 2016, said: ‘It’s been really exciting to see the phenomenal demand for tickets on the first day of booking of the BBC Proms, and hats off to our colleagues at the Royal Albert Hall for processing requests so quickly.

‘I am thrilled that the 2016 programme is proving as enticing as ever to music lovers and I can’t wait for the season to begin. There are still seats available for most of the concerts this summer and you can always come on the day and buy Promming (standing) tickets which cost just £6. See you at the Royal Albert Hall!’

James Ainscough, Royal Albert Hall’s chief operating officer, added: ‘We are delighted with the success of first day ticket sales, with over 118,000 tickets sold so far.

'Since last year we have invested in our website and booking system which enabled us to sell nearly 58,000 in the first hour, nearly double the number sold in the same period last year and setting a new record for the Royal Albert Hall?. This, combined with putting Season Tickets, CBeebies and Ten Pieces Proms on sale at different times, has significantly improved our customers’ experience.’
