Laura Mvula is one of the new wave of female songwriting talent to emerge in 2013 and the cover star for the year's first issue of M. She joins the likes of Jessie Ware and Katy B in doing much to show that British songwriting talent (particularly that of female writers and musicians) is in ruddy health. Read our interview with the classically trained composer, hear about her tips on songwriting and how she became a 'musical magpie' as well as an exclusive playlist featuring some of her best songs, influences and related artists.

OMD's synth-pop helped define the early eighties era and shaped the music of a whole generation of bedroom producers and songwriters. The band have sold more than 40 million records across a lengthy and influential career. Read about their full time in the limelight in our feature, the full interview with OMD's fiery Andy McCluskey and an exclusive playlist from the man himself.

Bristol

Bristol is currently enjoying something of a musical renaissance with a number of new electronic music songwriters and DJs doing their bit to put the city on the map. The city may be best known for the trip hop and drum and bass years of Massive Attack and Roni Size but there's currently a whole host of artists doing great things in the city. If you look outside the raves and the clubs, then there are indie bands, jazz artists and classical musicians all contributing to a thriving local scene. Check out our interviews with PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish and dance music star Eats Everything for two different perspectives on why Bristol is doing so well...
