Jerry Ragovoy, the soul songwriter responsible for some of the world's best-loved songs has died aged 80 following a stroke.

Born in  Philadelphia on 4 September 1930, Ragovoy broke into the music industry in the early 1950s, becoming a songwriter, arranger and producer. In the early 1960s, Ragovoy (nicknamed 'Rags') started writing with Bert Berns, creating some enduring classics together.

If 'Rags' was very much part of the music industry's backroom, his songs were some of its brightest stars. Ragovoy's fabulous songwriting catalogue includes:

Time Is On My Side (Kai Winding, Irma Thomas, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues)
Stay With Me (Lorraine Ellison)
Piece of My Heart (Erma Franklin, Big Brother and the Holding Company)
Get It While You Can (Howard Tate, Janis Joplin)
Cry Baby (Garnet Mimms, Janis Joplin)
It Was Easier to Hurt Her (Chris Farlowe, Dusty Springfield)
Move Me No Mountain (Hank Crawford, Chaka Khan, Soul II Soul, Love Unlimited)
