The Association of Independent Music (AIM), Rough Trade and the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) have called for Monday to be global release day.

Debate has been ongoing over the introduction of a global release day for new music, with Friday proposed as the potential day.

However, indie labels and retailers have put their names to an open letter urging the music industry to reconsider, citing the additional costs of a Friday release date as potentially harmful.

Kim Bayley, director general of the ERA, said: ‘The evidence suggests that virtually all the benefits of a global release date can be captured on a Monday without any additional costs.

‘It is a no-brainer. The potential to create a new music Monday focusing all of the industry's marketing efforts at the beginning of the week is very exciting.’

Alison Wenham, chairman and CEO of AIM, added: ‘Supporting independent retailers is a core principal of independent record companies, and we work together very closely. If the retailers' view is that Monday is the best day for new releases - why would we argue otherwise? They are after all the experts in retail.’

A global release date was debated back in August by many industry bodies as a way of maximising engagement for artists with music lovers. Read the previous news story.
