PRS for Music has announced that IMPEL, its European licensing initiative for independent publishers, has distributed a landmark £10m in royalties since its inception in 2010.

The platform collectively manages its members' online music rights, offering them the same benefits and scale that major publishers have achieved through licensing their mechanical rights through one manager. It also offers a one-stop shop for licensees seeking to use their music.

IMPEL now represents 26 independent publishers, including new members Carlin Music Corporation, Wixen Music UK Limited and Ole (UK), who officially join on 1 October.

Peter Thomas, general manager, Carlin Music Corporation, said: ‘We are excited to sign with IMPEL. It is vital that the independent publishing community stand together with an agreed agenda and one voice with regard to online licensing.

'The combined experience, knowledge and expertise of the individuals comprising the collective membership of IMPEL, together with the excellent management and team at PRS for Music, provides a first class platform for us to move forward in the key digital marketplace, confident that we will be able to secure the very best rates, service levels and opportunities for our songwriters and clients.’

Robert Ashcroft, chief executive, PRS for Music, added: ‘We are delighted to welcome Carlin, Wixen and Ole on board and are privileged to be working with an ever increasing number of such high profile independent publishers. To have already distributed in excess of £10m to our members in such an emerging and complex area is an achievement we are immensely proud of and we look forward to further success over the coming months and years.’
