Facebook has signed a licensing agreement with ICE – its first multi-territorial music licence with an online licensing and processing hub.

Under the deal, users will be able to upload and share videos containing music from ICE's catalogue on Facebook, Instagram, Oculus and Messenger – in turn, giving songwriters and composers the opportunity to earn royalties from the use of their music on the platforms.

ICE Services – a joint venture between PRS for Music, STIM and GEMA – is a pan-European music licensing and royalty processing venture with a database of around 31 million musical works.

It currently has over 40 online music licences in place with some of the world’s largest music streaming platforms and has distributed over €300m (£264.7m) to rightsholders since 2016.

Anjali Southward, Head of International Music Publishing Business Development at Facebook said: 'We are delighted to continue deepening our relationship with music by partnering with ICE in a first-of-its-kind licensing deal.

'Facebook’s journey with music is just beginning and we look forward to working with ICE and songwriters to build a community together around music.'

Ben McEwen, Commercial Director at ICE Services added: 'We are excited to work with Facebook to ensure we are delivering value back to creators for the use of their works on Facebook platforms.

'The future of music depends on our industries working together to enable the development of new models for music consumption in the digital age, to ensure a healthy future for songwriters and composers.'

The deal follows recent news that the social media giant has inked licensing agreements with rightholders including Kobalt Music Publishing, Sony/ATV and Universal Music Group.
