Eddy Grant will be guest of honour at a ceremony celebrating the completion of a new community refurbishment scheme on Electric Avenue, London.
The Brixton street Electric Avenue, so called because it was the first road in the UK to be lit by electricity, was immortalised by Grant’s 1983 international hit of the same name.
To mark the completion of a £1million refurbishment scheme, he will turn on the street’s lights on Monday 17 October and also take part in a Q&A with music writer Lloyd Bradley, author of Bass Culture and Sounds Like London.
A VIP album listening party will follow, offering the first chance to listen to new material from his forthcoming album Plaisance.
Over a 50 year career, Grant has released 15 albums, had five UK top 10 hits and received worldwide musical acclaim.
He first came to prominence as a founding member of the sixties pop group The Equals, who had three top 10 singles including Baby Come Back, which reached number one in 1968.
Grant said: ‘It’s a huge privilege to return to London, the city where I grew up, to be the guest of honour for switching on the lights at Electric Avenue - the street that has great cultural significance, not just for inspiring my song. The street has truly returned to its former glory and will be a great hub for the local community.’
Cllr Lib Peck, leader of Lambeth Council, added: ‘I’m delighted to rock down to Electric Avenue to celebrate this milestone with the legendary Eddy Grant, Brixton’s market traders and everyone who’s made this possible.’
