Dizzee Rascal has received a honorary degree from the University of East London.
The grime MC and award winning artist is one of 11 individuals to be recognised as a leader in their field and for their contribution to the east London community.
Dizzee’s musical career has grown out of Bow where he was brought up before he went on to become a star on the global stage. His debut solo album, Boy in da corner, saw him win the Mercury Music Prize in 2003
His fourth album, 2010’s Tongue'n’Cheek, was nominated for the prize again while 2012 saw his career come full circle with a performance at the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, only miles away from where he was brought up.
Leroy Logan MBE, founder and previous chair of both the National and London Black Police Associations at the Black Police Association movement; and photographer David Hoffman, an artist whose work has documented social and race issues in Britain over the past 30 years, are two of the other recipients.
