Dobinson, a former Zomba Group veteran, has been chief operating officer at BMG UK and Europe since 2010.
In his newly expanded role he will oversee operations and administration for BMG’s worldwide publishing and recorded businesses.
His responsibilities also include copyright management and royalties, supply chain management and IT.
Two years ago Dobinson successfully led the integration of indie publisher Chrysalis into the BMG fold.
More recently, he has overseen a clutch of high profile recording catalogue acquisitions including Virgin Music, Sanctuary Records and Mute Records.
BMG chief executive Hartwig Masuch said: ‘John is one of the few managers in the music business who combines high-level experience in both finance and operations with industry knowledge of both music publishing and recorded music, and we congratulate him on his new position.’
Dobinson added: ‘The past four years have been an incredibly exciting time helping build the new BMG into the major international player it now is. I am greatly looking forward to this expanded role and being a part of our continued growth in the years to come.’
