British singer songwriter Billy Bragg has accused Taylor Swift of ‘corporate power play’ by removing her music from Spotify.

Billy’s is the latest voice to be heard in the ongoing music streaming debate, reignited by Taylor’s decision to remove her music from the service.

She stated that her catalogue was pulled from Spotify as it doesn’t compensate songwriters fairly.

However, in a Facebook post, the UK artist criticised Taylor for making her new album and back catalogue available on Google’s new Music Key streaming service instead.

Writing on the service, Billy said: ‘What a shame that Taylor Swift’s principled stand against those who would give her music away for free has turned out to be nothing more than a corporate power play.

‘These worthy sentiments have been somewhat undermined by Swift making her new album and back catalogue available on Google’s new Music Key streaming service … which also offers listeners a free service alongside a premium subscription tier.’

He claimed that Taylor wanted to maximise her sales opportunities with the new record. in She is reported to have sold 1.28m copies of 1989 in the first week of its sale.

YouTube Music Key was launched last week as an alternative to current streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora.

Earlier this year, Billy told M why musicians need to make sure their voices are heard in the streaming debate. Read the comment piece in full.
