Al Stewart, Ross Ainslie, Ali Hutton and Songs of Separation were among the winners at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017.

Stewart received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Tony Blackburn, marking a career that began in the sixties and has seen him work alongside Bert Jansch, Jimmy Page, John Renbourn, Rick Wakeman, Tori Amos and Roy Harper.

Ainslie and Hutton won in the Best Duo category while 10-piece female folk troupe Songs of Separation took the Best Album accolade for their eponymous debut LP, which was funded through PRS Foundation's Beyond Borders initiative.

Elsewhere, Josie Duncan and Pablo Lafuente received the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and Kris Drever’s If Wishes Were Horses won the Best Original Track gong.

The ceremony took place at the Royal Albert Hall on 6 April with performances from Shirley Collins, Ry Cooder, Bill Bragg and Al Stewart.

Lewis Carnie, Head of BBC Radio 2, said: ‘Huge congratulations to all the winners of the Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017 - the calibre of all the nominees was outstanding.

‘This annual event is a wonderful celebration of the vibrant folk music scene and tonight’s show was spectacular, featuring some of folk’s most long standing, biggest and newest stars who Radio 2 is committed to supporting throughout the year.’

The Folk Awards will be broadcast on BBC Four on 9 April at 10pm as an hour-long highlights programme including all the performances.
