Artists are responsible for ensuring fans are aware of the value of their music, Ninja Tune’s Andreya Triana has said.

Andreya made the comments during a talk at the LEAF Festival at Tobacco Dock on 6 March. She appeared as part of a panel marking the 25th anniversary of the Ninja Tune label.

She said: ‘It’s our responsilbity as artists to make people aware of the value of music. You wouldn’t go into a gallery and take something for free. Having said that, live music is thriving - people coming to a gig shows that they are willing to pay for music.’

Label mate Toddla T also appeared on the panel alongside label owners Matt Black and Peter Quicke.

Toddla was keen to point out that while streaming is here to stay, music fans are investing in music in different ways.

‘The live scene is how we all make money,’ he said. ‘People still want to consume music by coming to a show, buying vinyl and merchandise.’

The pair agreed that being an artist in 2015 is about exploring creating revenue streams outside of the traditional release format and looking at areas such as sync as a way of sustaining a musical career.
