Y Reu are a schizophrenic five-piece from Dyffryn Nantlle whose music is full of surprises.

One minute they’re channelling the minimal rock spirit of Royal Blood or Slaves, the next minute they’re awash with Balearic love and a Happy Mondays percussive lilt.

With a mission to ‘be a voice for young people in Wales’, they craft their unique words and melodies from the Welsh language and draw creative influence from their immediate surroundings.

Their debut single Haf / Darnau Bach was released last year through the inventive Welsh imprint Recordiau I Ka Ching. This autumn they followed it up with Hadyn EP, receiving national radio play to boot.

With a fast and loose approach to music-making, those at Swn Festival are in for an Y Reu-shaped treat this weekend - don’t miss their live show on 7 November at Clwb Ifor Bach.

Here, we spend 30 seconds with Math Llwyd from the band to learn more about their expansive sound…

I first started writing music because…
I was never any good at football. I was really into bands in my teens so after I started learning the guitar the natural thing to do was start writing my own stuff.

I have been making music since…
I think I must have been eight or nine when I started getting clarinet and piano lessons (which I hated) but then picked up the guitar when I was around 12 and then got into writing and recording my own material. It's been a while…

Y Reu’s music is…
Average at best and a big middle finger up to anyone with any real musical talent!

Our favourite venue is…
Probably Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff. It's a great platform for Welsh bands and the system there is banging.

Music is important because…
I guess it's something everyone can relate to. Like, you rarely meet anyone who doesn't like music. If you do, you know instantly they are really boring and not to be trusted and you should just ignore them.

Singing in Welsh is important because...
We speak it every day and it's a part of our culture and all that so why not.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Bromas.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Again, Bromas.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Mhen I'n Troi. After that you should go and buy about 18 copies of our EP Hadyn then give them out to all your friends and tell them how good we are and that they should spend their hard earned money on our tunes as well so we can go out and spend it all in the pub.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Bored to tears.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Alive and well.

My favourite Welsh word is...
Reu.
