Ilona is a Bulgarian singer songwriter who has been living in the UK for the last decade. Although only officially starting her music career in May last year, she has already toured the UK, played three nights at Hop Farm Festival, become a favourite on BBC London, and supported Newton Faulkner and Adam Ant.

At the moment she’s recording her debut single and co-writing an album with producer Tony Moore. Ilona’s showcase at SXSW this year will mark her first American concert ever. Afterwards she will travel to LA to perform at several venues and radio stations.

Tonight she will play at Tony’s opening night of The Bedford at SXSW, alongside Beth Rowley and The Dunwells.

What are your inspirations and do they filter into your own sound?
I am inspired by experiences and struggles, through observation and my life as it happens. The songs really reflect that and I believe your sound is only authentic, real and touches people if it speaks from the heart.

What process do you go through to make music?
I tend to think a lot and people-watch, then lyrics and melody can appear in my head anywhere I go, mostly in cars and trains, and whilst sitting and playing my piano. I write everything down, as ideas often come while you're on the go!

Do you approach showcase gigs like SXSW differently to regular live sets?
No. To me, every gig should be played in the same way, being passionate about your music, open to the audience and immersed in the moment, whether it's busking on the street or playing a big stage in front of thousands.

What are you looking forward to the most about SXSW?
Meeting and maybe jamming with talented musicians from around the world! I'll be recording everything!

If you could perform with anyone (dead or alive) onstage at SXSW, who would it be?
Ryan Adams and 30 Seconds to Mars. Different genres indeed but I'm a big fan of both!

Where can we catch you performing back in the UK?
My next London shows are at The Barrel and Horn in Bromley on 30 March and Proud Camden on 8 April.
