Dark electronic indie outfit The KVB are a welcome antithesis to the glut of advert-friendly twee-pop that continues to soundtrack daytime radio, mobile phone commercials and US independent romcoms.
Their gloomy sound combines krautrock grooves with intense feedback and washed out vocals, and was first debuted in 2010 with a limited edition release through FLA Records.
Back then, the project was an audio/visual solo venture by Klaus Von Barrel. Kat Day joined on synths and visuals in late 2011 and the pair has since gone from strength to strength with headline tours around Europe and a well-received debut album Always Then, released on Clan Destine Records in 2012.
It’s an eerie set which echoes the fractured shoegaze of Soft Moon or the warm fuzz of Tropic of Cancer; a slow-burning debut that carries a lot of weight live.
In February they indulged in some heavy psychedelia and post-punk riffs with the release their second full length LP Immaterial Visions via Minimal Wave sub-label Cititrax. It was accompanied by a remix EP, featuring reworkings by underground techno pioneers Regis and Silent Servant among others.
They've since signed with A Recordings (BJM Anton Newcombe's label) and will release their latest eight-track offering Minus One on 18 November.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, Kat and Klaus are also currently on a world tour, which includes support slots with Loop and The Brian Jonestown Massacre and some dates in the UK. You can check out the schedule below.
We were lucky enough to catch up with them at the recent Liverpool Psych Fest to watch them deliver a bone-crushing performance. Below you can see them play the excellent track Leaning from their debut album:
