John Powell is a composer who has created scores for Hollywood blockbusters including Antz, Shrek, the Bourne films, Ice Age, Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon for which he won an Oscar and Ivor Novello award.

After studying at Trinity College of Music in London, John composed music for adverts, which eventually led to scoring films.

In our exclusive interview, John talks to M about his inspirations, influences and creating music.

You can read M's interview with Stuart Staples, the Tindersticks founder who has moved into scoring films, here.

M has also spoken to one half of the band Goldfrapp - Will Gregory - who has scored for film and opera.
