When we spoke to crate-digger Miles Cleret for our Awesome Africa feature in the latest issue of M magazine, we couldn't miss the opportunity to ask him to compile a playlist of his favourite new sub-Saharan tunes.

Miles is the founder of Soundway Records, a robust indie label that's been pumping out the very best in original vintage African sounds and brand new global bands since 2008.

It all started in 2002 with the release of a seminal compilation of Ghanaian music from the seventies, Ghana Sounds: Afrobeat, Funk & Fusion in '70s Ghana. From there, the label has gone on to celebrate music from across the African continent, Asia and Latin America, taking 'world music' out of its genre ghetto and onto people's stereos across Britain and beyond.

Since 2012, Miles has issued a series of original releases from the likes of Batida, Ibibio Sound Machine, Debruit & Alsarah, Ondatropica, The Meridian Brothers and My Panda Shall Fly, which he says is in response to a burgeoning beats-based global scene.

Here, he reveals the songs that are on repeat at Soundway HQ right now…

Izem - Water
Fantasma - Fire & Smoke
Nicola Cruz - Colibria
Afrologic, Aremu & Temi Oyedele - Omode Mewa
Flamingods - Kinich Ahau
Afroelectro - Cala Boca Menino
Aron Ottignon - Waterfalls in Tanzania
Osunlade - Schavanna
Richy Pitch - Odo Yea ft. Gouda Traditional Music
