Released in 2005, Nate James' debut album Set The Tone will celebrate its 20th anniversary in August. But, as he tells his regular collaborator Paul Mumford in the latest edition of our returning Duets interview series, much has changed in both his creative and personal world since then.

‘I always wanted to make music that stood the test of time, but to have an album that’s [now] 20 years old is crazy,’ Nate says in the interview about the record, which is set to be re-released later this year. ‘When Set The Tone first came out, iTunes was barely a word, there was no Spotify or Instagram. While this album is 20 years old to you and I, it’s going to [feel] like a brand body of work to those who are only now hearing it.’

As well as that upcoming anniversary, Nate and Paul — who are set to bring out a film together in the not-too-distant future which explores the ever-changing music industry — discuss the importance of Pride when it comes to representation, the evolving industry and audience demands for songwriters, and why there’s a compelling ‘story to be told’ about Nate’s journey from 2005 to the present day.
