‘We’re of that generation that looks back to 20th century music so much,’ says Nubiyan Twist vocalist and songwriter Nubiya Brandon.

‘We hold our careers up to comparison with the old greats, but really we need to look forward and have faith in our own talents,’ she continues.

We’re gathered at the Jazz FM Awards 2017 to celebrate the night’s nominees and winners – arguably the most diverse bunch yet to be honoured by the Awards.

Nubiya, who is a pivotal member of the innovative jazz/afrobeat/soul/reggae 11-piece Nubiyan Twist, shares her views on the health of the British jazz scene, the artists she’s tipping for success and what’s in store for her band…

Nubiyan Twist play Hoochie Coochie in Newcastle on 26 May. Their new single, Dance Inna London / All the Pieces, is out now.
