Many of Nadine Shah’s songs have been brewed in the rural setting of Whitburn. This small town in the north-east of England watches over the North Sea and provides a suitably windswept backdrop to the music of Nadine, who deals in smoky, piano-led songs full of love and lust.

It’s this ability to capture such heart wrenching emotion in her first EPs Aching Bones and Dreary Town which has created much anticipation for forthcoming debut album Love Your Dum and Mad. It’s scheduled for release via Apollo Records on 22 July and saw Blur/The Horrors Ben Hillier producer again collaborating with her in the studio.

M caught up with Nadine ahead of her recent performance at PRS for Music’s Almost Famous showcase. Watch her performance of live favourite Dreary Town.

Below you can watch our interview with Nadine where she talks songwriting, her classical training and how she ended up giving career advice to Ed Sheeran…
