‘Put a helmet on and come on in here,’ says Lionel Richie. The multi-million-selling pop legend is dishing out advice to new songwriters backstage at The Ivors 2018 and he’s not holding back.

‘It’s not a charming, charmed experience. You’ve got to write one hit, then another, then another. The only way to do that is to get stuck in. I would love to tell you there is a formula, but there isn’t one, it’s just you have to get in it and be unique,’ he continues.

Wise words for a songwriter and artist who’s been embroiled in the world of pop since the late sixties. Starting out with the Commodores, Lionel went on to have stratospheric solo success with hits including Hello, All Night Long and Three Times a Lady.
