Folly Rae is a pop provocateur who’s fast becoming known for her studio alchemy and songwriting nous.
She won early love from BBC 1Xtra back in 2014 when the station got behind her first ever track Run For Cover and marked her as a serious contender to Ellie Goulding.
But the support didn’t stop there: the station’s resident DJs have since given follow-up Someone I Don’t Know heavy rotation and, together with PRS for Music Foundation, have helped her make the journey to SXSW this year.
Folly, real name Rachel Virtue, originally trained as a classical dancer before deciding it was her love for music that she wanted to pursue.
She studied at Guildford music college ACM, but was thrown out just a year into her course. Not that she’d let that stop her…
She soon found herself writing for other artists and teaming up with Jake Gosling and Sticky Studios (Ed Sheeran and Paloma Faith).
Now officially dubbed ‘emerging’, ‘upcoming’ and ‘one to watch’, Folly makes the pilgrimage to SXSW - the world’s biggest music convention - to show off her musical chops.
We caught up with her beforehand to learn more about the makings of her lush alt-pop sound and what she’s hoping to get out of SXSW…
