Esco Williams has quickly gone from jotting down snatches of lyrics in his exercise book at school to winning the MOBO Unsung Award. We find out how.

Self-dubbed a 'soul powered nerd', Esco is a singer-songwriter from Liverpool. His music is contemporary R&B with an infusion of soul and 16-bit bleeps, inspired by the music he grew up listening to and the games he played as a child.

In fact, Esco tells us in the video below that while on tour, he and his band are most likely to be found playing Mario and reliving memories of Star Trek episodes of yore when not soundchecking.

It is his love of video game soundtracks and musical heroes such as Stevie Wonder, Nas and Biggie that fuels his unique sound, a sound that was rewarded with the MOBO Unsung Award 2012. He recently recorded a full-length album in just 10 days via Pledge Music entitled New Challenger #HCNC, which is due for release in 2013.

Watch our interview with Esco below to find out more about his songwriting style and the influences that tie into his music.
