From the list of nominees for this year’s Ivors there was one name from the songwriting glitterati that some music fans may not have been aware of.

Step forward Bear’s Den - part of the Communion Records imprint, this trio have enjoyed a steep, upwards career path over the last year with their emotive mix of banjos and folk styles earning them comparisons to the likes of Mumford and Sons and Staves.

Their success culminated in an Ivor Novello nomination for Best Song Musically and Lyrically category for their song Above the Clouds of Pompeii.

Although the band eventually lost out to Hozier at the event, we were on hand to quiz the group about their nomination, the importance of small venues to grass roots acts and what the future has up its sleeve…
