However, listening to Vanessa 'Purple' Ferdinand, perhaps it should not be? A tattooist by day (she is heavily tattooed herself), Purple Ferdinand delicately plucks away at her uke, making it sound more like a harp, while her gentle voice reveals vulnerabilities and hope as she sings of past loves.

She grew up listening to a range of music, including Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Mariah Carey an Mary J Blige, but today listens to Canadian electro-pop duo New Look and Lianne La Havas among others.

Some of this inspiration can be heard in her music, but her style is definitely her own. Decide for yourself by listening to the first part of her session below, where she plays Beautiful Anomaly, with more to come throughout the week.
