Blair Dunlop

Blair Dunlop has authentic folk blood running through his veins. As the son of legendary songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ashley Hutchings (Fairport Convention, The Albion Band) he has grown up around traditional acoustic music, picking up all the tools he needs to turn out his own graceful ballads. We caught up with him after soundcheck at the London Folkfest 2013 to record him play Blight & Blossom.

Debut album Blight & Blossom was released last autumn to much fanfare. With guest musicians including his dad, Larkin Poe, Joan Wasser (Joan As Policewoman), Ashley Pete Zorn and Tim Harries, it’s a considered effort that sets out Blair’s stall as a formidable new songwriting force.

The assured 21-year-old took the set on the road for an Australian and European tour, which was followed by a Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Drive-time slots on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music have further helped raise his chips this year.

We caught up with him after soundcheck at the London Folkfest 2013 to record him play the title track from the album.
