Each year the event acknowledges the skill, devotion and commitment each recipient has invested in UK music, and rewards people from all fields including songwriters and composers, producers and promoters, and all those who play a supporting role in the industry. This year, the highest profile recipient was Beatles producer Sir George Martin, who was given a standing ovation when he received his award.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was also honoured, alongside renowned publisher Mandy Oates, music journalist Chris Welch and the BBC's Creative Head of Music Entertainment, Mark Cooper, who presides over Later...with Jools Holland, and brought Glastonbury festival to the small screen.

Legendary classical guitarist John Williams was also recognised with a gold badge, but was unable to attend the ceremony due to poor health.

Later, Jude Kelly OBE, Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre used her award acceptance speech to criticise government plans to introduce a new Baccalaureate education programme that would replace GCSEs and potentially harm music education in schools.
