2023 marks 50 years since a global cultural movement took its very first breath. Hip hop, as its common origin story goes, was born on 11 August 1973 when  18-year-old Clive 'DJ Kool Herc' Campbell and his sister Cindy threw a party in the community room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York.

How did Herc's pioneering party go on to influence the world? The answer to that, and so much more, can be found in the latest special edition of M Magazine, which marks this year's widely celebrated 50th anniversary of hip hop.

Featuring new interviews with the likes of ENNY, Blak Twang and hip hop photographer Tee Max, this issue of M also explores the genre's symbiotic relationship with radio, dives into the history of sampling and traces its radical, resistant roots.
