What happens to the licence fee?

The fees generated by our music licences ensure that songwriters, composers and music publishers – many of whom are small businesses themselves – are paid when their music is used.

We distribute nearly 90 percent of the licence fees we collect back to our members in the form of royalties and only deduct our administration cost.

Royalties help ensure our members can make a livelihood from their music and keep them making the music we all love.

This animation shows the route of a royalty, from the creation of music through to its licensed performance and commercial usage. It shows how our organisation pays songwriters, composers and music publishers, enabling the creation of yet more new music.
