Richard King - Faber Music

Richard King

Having worked 30 years in the music industry, 17 of them as CEO of Faber Music, I bring to the PRS Board valuable hands-on experience of the day-to-day running of a busy, independent, all-round music publisher. Close working relationships with leading international classical, media and educational composers gives me a deep understanding of the issues currently faced by the creative music community.

Issues facing PRS are relentless and intellectually challenging. The unintended consequence of Safe Harbour legislation urgently needs resolution. My first-hand experience of the damaging effect of this legal loophole for online sheet music has given me valuable insight as PRS works with the European Commission towards revising the rules. I pushed strongly for the current review of the LP tariff, which is, shamefully, amongst the lowest in Europe: PRS’ arguments need to be articulated with conviction and clarity and from a position of direct commercial experience with users, which I have.

My international experience, both as a long-standing member of PRS’ (former) International Committee, and as the CEO of an international publisher, is valuable as PRS seeks to develop its relevance in an increasingly global licensing environment. The renewal of the MCPS SLA agreement is vital and my involvement as one of the negotiating team which set it up in 2013 enables me to support this renewal with genuine insight.

My special interests are education and classical music. As Chair of Print Music Licensing Ltd I have been central to the introduction in 2013 and subsequent running of this valuable national licence for copying in schools. If we succeed in embedding at this level a recognition of the cultural and commercial power of music and, in turn, a fundamental respect for the creator, then we take a massive step towards a national psyche which values copyright in the future.
