Jonathan Starkey MA (DIST)

Jonathan Starkey

I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and was tutored by Moscow Conservatoire trained musicians. I have a Master’s Degree (with Distinction) in Popular Music and for over 30 years I have enjoyed a career in the production music industry, as a composer, arranger and virtuoso pianist. During that time, I have seen and experienced many industry changes.

Some changes have been positive, most have not. My position on the Board will be not only to preserve PRS for Music as a collective, but promote all members who add value to the chain from creator to end user, remembering without creators, there is no music industry. Inequalities which have manifested over the last 25 years have created challenges which have to be acknowledged and addressed.

I seek a more open, transparent and streamlined PRS for Music, enabling members to have more control over their affairs, especially digitally, and have a greater business understanding of PRS for Music and our industry in general. As such, I will be contactable by the membership like an MP is to his/her constituents.

The UK is entering a new phase. Whether the IN/OUT referendum sees us in a modified EU, or an independent nation, music will remain a global language and an important part of the UK’s gross domestic product. As an ambassador, I have the political understanding, contacts and ability, in conjunction with fellow directors, to help promote PRS for Music and our industry nationally and internationally.

PRS for Music has an opportunity to make changes for the greater good and to be the strongest collection agency in the world. I believe I know how to help make that happen. It’s time for a fresh approach, with ideas and drive for positive change.

Let’s make a difference together. Vote for Jonathan Starkey.
