International trade and fiscal policy

British songwriters are internationally successful.PRS for Music has a positive export balance in copyright royalties, with significant growth forecast to 2016. That growth directly contributes to growth of the UK economy.

We are dependent on the international copyright system to adequately protect our members’ rights around the world. We therefore engage with government on trade policy development, including regulation and fiscal policy, to support the creative industries abroad.

Key markets include: US, China, India and Brazil.

The respect for global intellectual property standards is important and we regret the continuation of the US administration not to amend its law to comply with the 2001 WTO Panel decision. That decision ruled that the exceptions for public performance of music in bars and grills were unlawful by international treaty standards.
