Music users and orphan works

Are you trying to find the owner of the copyright in a musical work? Do you want to know if a piece of music is or might be an orphan work?  Are you conducting or about to conduct a diligent search for a music copyright owner? Are you thinking of applying for an orphan work licence under the new Copyright and Rights in Performances (Licensing of Orphan Works) Regulations 2014?

If so, then PRS for Music can help you.  We have a database of over 19 million musical works that we consult when contacted by music users for copyright ownership details.

If you are undertaking a diligent search for the copyright owner, please email applications@prsformusic.com or telephone +44 (0)20 3741 3888.

Please provide us with as much information as you can on the work, including:

  • Work title
  • Alternative work titles
  • Date of publication
  • Names of writers or publishers (if known)

If PRS for Music is unable to identify or locate the right holder from its records, you might wish to make enquiries of one of the other sources suggested in the Government’s guidance for applicants.
