If your business uses music

If your business is playing music for the benefit of your employees or customers, you must have a music licence. This includes music that is:

  • part of a TV programme
  • on the radio, including talk shows
  • played from CDs, downloads or streaming services like Spotify
  • played by a DJ
  • performed live

A PRS licence is additional to any government licence you have set up for your business. Even if you weren’t aware of this when setting up your business, you are still legally responsible for obtaining a PRS music licence.

Music on your TV or radio

TV and radio broadcasts often contain our members' music, so you'll need a PRS licence if you're using a TV or radio at work. This includes digital streaming and on-demand programmes. Even if you already pay your TV provider or pay for a TV licence, you'll still need a PRS licence.

Recorded music

If your business plays any type of recording in a public or staff space, you'll need a PRS music licence, including any music that's played by a DJ, downloaded or streamed.

Live music

Even if you pay a band or singer to perform, and even if they are one of our members, you will still need a PRS music licence.

Your first-year licence

If we have approached your business to secure a licence, your first licence payment will be the standard applicable licence fee plus and additional 50 percent. This is to cover our finding costs when we need to locate and contact businesses without music licences. This is not a statutory fine.

If you've played music without a licence

If you choose to stop using copyright music on your premises, you will not need a licence from this moment on. However, you will still be legally required to pay for any previous use of copyrighted music.
