Sir Paul McCartney received a special award from PRS for Music to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Beatles song Yesterday.

The former Beatle and now solo star was presented with a plaque to mark the occasion by PRS for Music’s chief executive officer Robert Ashcroft during the first night of his sold out run at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday 23 May.

Yesterday first appeared on Beatles album Help in August 1965.

Robert Ashcroft, PRS for Music chief executive officer, said: ‘Yesterday is not just an iconic song in Paul's body of work but an iconic song of the last century.

PRS for Music has collected rights for the composition since it was released fifty years ago and in that time it has inspired countless writers, been covered by countless artists and has resonated with musicians, radio broadcasters and the public in a way that goes beyond words. It’s this 'magic' that PRS wanted to recognise in this unique award.’

Sir Paul was joined on stage by Foo Fighters star Dave Grohl for the opening night of his Out There tour at the O2. The pair performed I Saw Her Standing There together.
