Flautist Sir James Galway and conductor Sir Neville Marriner were among the winners at the Gramophone Awards 2014.
The event, which took place on 17 September at St John’s, Smith Square in London, celebrates the great and the good from the world of classical music.
Sir James, the renowned classical musician and former principal flute of the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra received the award to mark ‘50 years of bringing classical music to the widest possible audience’.
James Galway said: ‘I used to go to Marylebone Library and read Gramophone. An hour later I'd think “Jesus, I should be practising the flute!" Thank you Gramophone for everything you have enriched my life with. Thank you to everybody in this room who has played a part in my career ... nearly everybody has in one way or another.’
A special Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to conductor Sir Neville Marriner to mark his 90th birthday year and to celebrate his prolific recording career.
Further winners on the night include the Nightingale String Quartet for young artist of the year award while the label of the year award was given to the Edinburgh-based independent label Delphian Records.
