New College Nottingham has launched the very first academic course devoted to the genre of heavy metal.

The two-year degree offers students the chance to study the art of songwriting, performing, recording and the best ways to market themselves as musicians.

Taking up the course will set back potential students £5,750.00 in their first yet and as yet undecided sum in the second.

According to the college, graduates of the degree could work as a songwriter, musician, music teacher or for a record company.

Liam Maloy, a lecturer in music performance at NCN, told the BBC: ‘It's a degree, so it will be academically rigorous.

‘In the past, heavy metal has not been taken seriously and is seen as lacking academic credibility when compared with other genres such as jazz and classical music. But that's just a cultural construction.’
