For up-and-coming music talent, showcases used to be all about trying to engineer a kind of alchemy: combine equal parts right place, right time and right A&R exec in order to arrive at the legendary ‘record deal’. That can still happen. But showcases these days are also about achieving a broader range of possibilities, like building a fanbase and perfecting the art of playing live. Showcases also come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from pub gigs to the British Music Abroad contingent who play the international stages at Midem and South by Southwest (SXSW).
