BBC Young Musician 2018 announced

Birmingham pianist Lauren Zhang has been named the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2018.

Birmingham pianist Lauren Zhang has been named the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2018.

The 16-year-old, who is is studying for her GCSEs, has been attending the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire since 2009.

For the Young Musician final yesterday (Sunday), Zhang performed Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto no.2 in G minor, op.16.

Kerry Andrew, chair of the judging panel, said: ‘Lauren’s performance left us all breathless! Her exceptional level of technical skill and intelligent musicality shone through in a beast of a piece. We see great things in her future!’

Zhang will go on to perform on the BBC Radio 3 stage at The Biggest Weekend in Coventry on 28 May and at the BBC Young Musician 40th anniversary Prom on 15 July.

The other 2018 finalists were 18-year-old saxophonist Robert Burton and 18-year-old cellist Maxim Calver.
