Ewan MacColl, a singer, songwriter, record producer and social activist, will be inducted into the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Hall of Fame at the forthcoming event.

Taking place on Wednesday 22 April in Cardiff, the awards will see some of the biggest names in folk music come together to celebrate the scene.

This year’s event - the 16th in its history - will welcome Yusuf/Cat Stevens for a headline performance, Grammy Award-winning artist Loudon Wainwright III and English folk singer Kate Rusby.

Commenting on Ewan MacColl, Radio 2 Folk Show presenter Mark Radcliffe said: ‘It is pretty much impossible to overstate the importance of Ewan MacColl’s influence on folk music.

‘A writer, dramatist, enabler and activist he has inspired generations of musicians and poets to stand up for what they believe and to use art to challenge authority and the status quo. But he isn’t just a voice of protest. He was a romantic too - a lover as well as a fighter - and capable of sublime moments of heartfelt tenderness and passion.’

Nominees for the Folk Award categories including prizes for folk singer of the year, best duo, best group and best album will be announced in the run up to the awards.

Tickets for the event are available now from bbc.co.uk/radio2.
